Meshing musical roots is the name of the game for Anna Mertson. Blending together the notes, rhythms and topics of her upbringing is what creates her different kind of style. "What is your genre?" is a difficult question to answer. It's a melodic blend of country, folk, blues and feeling with lyrics surrounding a myriad of subjects from folk traditions to compelling thoughts.
Born of the Foothills
I grew up in a small North Carolina town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. I remember being young and playing guitar with my late grandfather. We would sit in the living room of my grandparents house with a red hymn book. We sang and played for hours. He brought me to the church choir which eventually turned into me doing solo songs. From there, my music career was born. I'm grateful that my roots are such inspiration for my music - even to this day.
